Army Christmas 2010

Our December started with flair. Darryl's unit hosted a Christmas Party for the soldiers in his unit and their families. It was held at the armory in San Leandro. We got there early and found out that Darryl was the MC for the event. He's not much of a big talker, but as the Commander he gets that opportunity more than he would like.
The party was a big success. The food was all donated and prepared by the soldiers and volunteers from the community. There's a group called the blue star moms (a group of volunteer ladies that all have children serving in the military in some way). These ladies are so wonderful. They helped get things set up for the kids of the soldiers (gifts, games, activities etc.) as well as food and support services for the families in the unit. They do wonderful things and they are so invested because they have a soldier. Other groups were also represented. Darryl's big push for the overall success of the unit is geared toward education, so many of the colleges in the area had representatives on hand to encourage the families to go to school. My favorite part of the day was when Santa came. He was WONDERFUL. He came in with music and bells. He sat down and took time with every child. Tanner even sat on his lap and accepted a gift from him. This is the first year he even talked to Santa. Parker wasn't interested. He only liked to admire Santa from afar. The boys did like a small toy Santa that played music. They figured out how to push the button and get it to play music, then they would dance around to the Christmas song.
Some of the highlights of the day were the 2 big bounce houses, the delicious food, and the fun pinatas for the kids. It was a long fun day and the boys were sad to leave.
Unfortunately for us we didn't get to take Darryl home with us. He flew to Virginia the next day for a 2 week training called a Captain's career course.Having him gone was no fun at all. He enjoyed having some time away for the first few days, but around the holidays it was hard on all of us. We were so happy to welcome him back. When he got home it really felt like Christmas was around the corner.
