Hello from a spring filled Elk Grove. Love and blossoms are in the air this month. It has been a wonderful month filled with fun and projects. Our yard was the first project of the year. We pruned the remainder of our fruit trees and cleaned out the weeds from all of the flower beds. Due to the horrific drought happening in California right now, we do not want to waste any of our precious water on the dead or ugly things between the beautiful plants in the back yard. Our Magnolia tree has been vibrant this year and has set the tone for this beautiful spring. Thankfully we finally got some rain this month and many a prayer has been sent up on behalf of our parched land.
Tanner's big news of the month was the annual Pinewood Derby. Darryl, Tanner and I created "the Viper" car. It is silver with a green and gold snakeskin painted down the center. Tanner decided it needed a big silver brain on ton, so we added some weight and glued on a silver ball on top or make it a very smart viper car. It must have been a smart idea because he won 3rd place with his creation. He had a lot of fun and the boys were very excited and encouraging. I'm sure we will have many a car to create in the years to come.
Our other fun project of the month was Valentine's Day. All of the kids had school parties and we also had a fun party with the Mom's Club. We went creative this year with the Valentines. Tanner chose to do a Minion theme. His said, "You're 1 in a Minion Valentine" and had a twinkie body and a little bit of paper and googly eyes to create the minion effect. Parker chose a bug theme. His said "Happy Valentine's day Love Bug". Then we put plastic bugs on it. We really searched for non food items for his preschool class because so many kids have food allergies and we wanted everyone to enjoy a little treasure. Parker brought all the extra bugs to his bed, and it freaked me out a couple of times when I found them the next morning. I had to do a double take to make sure they were the fake ones. (The experience brought back bad cockroach memories of New York City). Alyssa chose to have play dough for her theme. Hers said, "Dough you want to be my Valentine?" She was thrilled to pass them out at her preschool and had so much fun playing with her own dough at home. Hers was also so simple to make, that she was able to put them together herself, which she totally enjoyed. She's at the stage where she wants to do everything herself. Strong and independent, that's my girl!
The Moms Club party was so fun. It was just the little ones, so we had a blast making fun Valentine hugs. We traced the kids with outstretched arms on butcher paper then cut them out and the kids decorated themselves to send a hug to the dads or grandparents that couldn't come to the party. We made some trail mix with snacks each of the kids picked out. The kids were so cute and had lots of fun.
When we had a break in the rainy weather, it was warm and wonderful, so we took full advantage this month of being outside as much as possible. We rediscovered the Pals Playground at Miwok Park. New structures were added and the park opened up to a whole new area. We play out in front of our house a lot and Alyssa has become an expert tree climber. Parker is great on the scooter and Tanner brought out the roller blades again. Our neighbors also love a great round of 4 square, and our kids have made up all kinds of crazy rules to help it stay fair with all of the age differences.
Last but not least, it was time again this month for a Suzette birthday party. This year she outdid herself with a painting party. A whole group of ladies got together and we ate Italian food and delicious caramel cake, then painted with Acrylics for the remainder of the evening. We worked until almost 11 pm. A professional artist brought all of the equipment and a sample design for a painting, then taught everyone how to make this simple Italian scene. I went a little crazy and did some of my own thing, but I had a blast. I never have time to paint, and although it is far from a masterpiece, I had so much fun starting and finishing something all in one night and hanging out with great friends as well. Great times!
